Parkdale began as an elite residential suburb and “the place to be seen” with Sunnyside Amusement Park and Bathing Pavilion, known as “Toronto’s playground by the lake.” Unfortunately, Sunnyside was shut down to make way for the Gardiner Expressway and the neighbourhood went into a period of decline. Many local artists now call Parkdale home, which has lead to some gentrification, and the opening of the Parkdale Arts and Cultural Centre. Parkdale is a popular spot for Nuit Blanche (White Night), an all night arts festival that takes place throughout the city traditionally on the first Saturday in October.
